Mayor Reichert to Announce Financial Literacy Partnership with Uptown Macon Rotary

Mayor’s Office, Macon-Bibb County Office of Workforce Development, BB&T and Uptown Macon Rotary Club to Offer Program to Local Youth

Macon, GA – On Thursday, December 3rd, Mayor Reichert will announce the details of a new initiative combining resources from the Mayor’s Office, the Macon-Bibb County Office of Workforce Development (MOWD), BB&T and Uptown Macon Rotary to offer a youth financial literacy service program for area high school students.  The announcement will be made at 12:15 pm at Idle Hour Country Club (Trotter’s Room).

Through this partnership, the Mayor’s Office, MOWD, BB&T, Uptown Rotarians and other local sponsors will teach area youth how to save for the future, open and maintain a checking account, pay for college, create a budget and successfully manage a credit card.

“The Rotary Clubs of Macon have a long history of philanthropy and a spirit of service in the community” said Mayor Reichert. “I am delighted to support this creative public -private partnership focusing on critical life skills that will help equip our young folks with great tools, instill financial discipline and provide role models to help mentor their development.

To aid the program’s success, Uptown Rotary will donate over $2,000 to help support the joint service project. These funds represent a portion of the proceeds raised from the Uptown Rotary Ocmulgee Adventure Race (U-ROAR!) held this past summer.

“During these uncertain times, it is critical that all ages learn how to handle money – from personal budgeting to balancing a checkbook,” said Mark Driver, Uptown Rotary President. “For this reason, and through our partnership with the Mayor’s Office and the Macon-Bibb County Office of Workforce Development, we expect this project to yield great results to participating youth and their families. And, as Rotarians, we feel it is our duty to provide this much-needed service to our community.”

Student sessions will begin on December 7th and will be held at the Macon-Bibb County Office of Workforce Development and the Booker T. Washington Community Center. The program will conclude in May. Students will be divided into groups of 25 with several instructors per class and will discuss various topics to include:

• December 7th and 21st: Bank on it—basic functions of the banks and other financial institutions
• January 11th and 18th: Check it out—how to open and maintain a checking account
• February 1st and 15th: Setting Financial Goals—basic budgeting
• March 1st and 15th: Pay Yourself First—importance of saving
• April 5th and 19th: Charge it Right—credit cards
• May 3rd and 17th: Paying for College and Cars

Barbara Yancey, Administrator of the Macon Bibb-County Office of Workforce Development stated “Recently we held a discussion group with several high school students from our Year Round program. The students were engaging, dynamic and intuitively understood the importance of good financial habits. I believe the Financial Literacy program will be a tremendous benefit to them, their families and our community.  We are deeply appreciative to Uptown Rotary for leading this initiative and to our local sponsor, BB&T, for partnering with us to renovate the Booker T. Washington Community Center and committing additional trainers to help ensure the program’s success.
